American Airlines Partners

American Airlines' partner airline page lists 24 airlines: 13 Oneworld members and 11 additional partners. However, you can't redeem AAdvantage miles for flights on some AAdvantage partner airlines, including Aer Lingus, IndiGo, and JetSMART. Additionally, both the Silver Airways and JetBlue–American Airlines partnership ended, though both are still listed on the partner page.

Here are the Oneworld airlines you can book with AAdvantage miles:

Earning American Airlines Miles

Travelers have a slew of ways to earn American Airlines miles. In addition to flying American Airlines and its partners, you can earn AA miles through hotel bookings, car rentals, cruise bookings, American Airlines' partnership with Hyatt, Bask Bank, AAdvantage Dining, SimplyMiles, and so many more. Alternatively, you also can buy American Airlines miles.

However, the AAdvantage program isn't a transfer partner of any major bank points program. Transferring points or miles to American AAdvantage from other programs generally provides poor value. The primary exception for some high-value redemptions is Marriott Bonvoy; you can transfer points to AA at a 3:1 ratio. Here's a look at the programs that do transfer to American AAdvantage:

Award Pricing for American Airlines Flights

The most obvious way to redeem American Airlines miles is for American Airlines flights. For one-way awards solely operated by American Airlines and originating in North America, you can see estimated starting rates on the following award chart. Note that American Airlines has changed how this award chart looks on its website, but the values are the same (at least for now):

20 Airlines You Can Book Using American Airlines AAdvantage® Miles (5)

Sometimes, you'll find lower rates than these published rates — though you'll often find much higher rates. In short, the award chart for flights American Airlines publishes isn't all that useful in practice since it only shows estimated starting values.

For shorter flights, you may want to consider booking your American Airlines flight with British Airways Avios. Sometimes, the mileage costs for these flights are lower through the Avios program than through the AAdvantage program — although this is less true after several recent British Airways partner award chart devaluations.

American Airlines Partner Award Charts

American AAdvantage still maintains partner award charts, organized by region of origin, for Oneworld or partner airline itineraries. And this is where you can find excellent value. Unlike AAdvantage's award chart for American-operated flights, rates for awards involving partner airlines do not vary. One flat redemption cost applies — subject to award availability, of course.

Here's a look at the partner award chart for one-way itineraries originating in the contiguous 48 U.S. states or Canada (check the partner award chart page to see charts for travel originating in other regions). Again, note that American Airlines has revamped how this chart shows up on its website, but the values are the same.

Many additional qualifiers follow this chart on American's webpage, like routing rules and airline stipulations. Read these conditions carefully before planning travel to any of these regions on partner airlines.

Oneworld Partner Flights

You can redeem American Airlines miles for itineraries that include flights operated by Oneworld airlines and other AAdvantage partners.

As long as your itinerary includes at least one segment operated by an airline that's not American Airlines, you'll pay set award rates defined by the AAdvantage partner award chart. Here's a look at your options.

Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines, based on the U.S. West Coast and serving more than 120 destinations in North and Central America, joined the Oneworld alliance in 2021.

You can redeem American Airlines miles for award travel on Alaska Airlines, including itineraries with flights operated by other Oneworld and partner airlines. Plus, travelers with American Airlines elite status can also enjoy select elite perks when flying on Alaska Airlines.

Award rates follow the AAdvantage partner award chart. So, you'll need to redeem 12,500 miles for a one-way economy award within the contiguous 48 U.S. states or Canada with flights operated by Alaska Airlines. For instance, that could mean flying from Fort Lauderdale (FLL) to Seattle (SEA):

British Airways

British Airways serves nearly 250 destinations in 90 countries from its hubs in London. You can redeem American miles for travel on British Airways, including itineraries with some segments operated by other Oneworld and partner airlines.

When you go to redeem American miles for an award flight between the U.S. and Europe, chances are good that you'll see some results with at least one segment operated by British Airways.

The positive of awards with at least one segment operated by British Airways is that these awards will price based on the AAdvantage partner award chart, meaning you'll need to redeem the following miles for a one-way itinerary between the contiguous 48 U.S. states and Europe:

  • Economy: 30,000 miles (22,500 miles for travel on off-peak dates)
  • Premium economy: 40,000 miles
  • Business: 57,500 miles
  • First: 85,000 miles

You also can redeem 10,000 miles for a one-way economy award (or 15,000 miles for a one-way business-/first-class award) within the United Kingdom.

However, the negative aspect of awards with some or all segments operated by British Airways is the high taxes and fees. These tend to be worse when British Airways operates longer segments due to the U.K.'s air passenger duty.

Taxes and fees on premium cabin award tickets can exceed $600 each way. If your itinerary calls for transatlantic travel on British Airways, consider booking with Asia Miles instead of AAdvantage miles to save on exorbitant surcharges.

Cathay Pacific

Cathay Pacific serves more than 70 destinations in nearly 30 countries from its hub in Hong Kong. You can redeem American miles for award travel on Cathay Pacific, including itineraries with segments operated by other Oneworld and partner airlines.

Cathay Pacific serves several destinations within the United States and offers a logical and comfortable way to jet around Asia. You can redeem AAdvantage miles from select cities in the United States and reach many popular destinations within Asia with a single connection in HKG.

The Hong Kong-based carrier operates out of AA's “Asia Region 2.” This means that the following AAdvantage partner award chart applies for one-way award flights operated by Cathay Pacific from Hong Kong and most other destinations in Asia (the primary exceptions are Japan and Korea, which are in “Asia Region 1”):

Finnair

Finnish flag carrier Finnair only flies to a few cities in the United States, but it serves more than 100 destinations in 37 countries from its hub in Helsinki.

Below is the applicable AAdvantage partner award chart for one-way travel on Finnair, including itineraries with other Oneworld and partner airlines from Europe.

You can also fly within Finland for just 10,000 miles one-way in economy. So, while Finnair might offer service to fewer destinations worldwide than other partners like British Airways, it makes exploring Scandinavia possible with American Airlines miles. Flying Finnair long-haul is another great option. You can fly from the U.S. to Finland for 57,500 miles each way in business class.

Iberia

Based in Madrid, Iberia operates routes to 135 destinations in 46 countries. Iberia serves some U.S. airports, so it may let you avoid the high taxes and fees you'd incur flying British Airways transatlantic.

You can redeem American miles for award travel on Iberia (including flights marketed by Iberia but operated by Iberia Express), other Oneworld airlines, and partner airlines. These award redemptions follow the standard AAdvantage partner award chart, also letting you fly one-way within Spain for just 10,000 miles in economy or 15,000 in business/first class.

But, for direct flights between North America and Spain, consider using Iberia Avios instead of American Airlines miles. Iberia charges as few as 17,000 Avios in economy or 34,000 Avios in business for a one-way flight between the East Coast and Spain on off-peak dates.

Japan Airlines

Want to visit Asia and fly comfortably, regardless of class of cabin? Japan Airlines leads the way, serving over 90 destinations in more than 20 countries from its hubs in Japan.

You can redeem American miles for award travel on Japan Airlines, including awards involving other Oneworld and partner airlines. Japan belongs to “Asia Region 1” on the AAdvantage partner award chart, so redemptions start at 35,000 miles in economy and go up to 80,000 miles for first-class awards for travel between the contiguous 48 U.S. states and Japan.

Travelers can connect in Japan to anywhere in “Asia Region 2” for 2,500 more miles in economy, 10,000 more miles in business class, or 30,000 more miles in first class. Interestingly, no additional miles are required to connect to “Asia Region 2” if you are booking a premium economy award from the contiguous 48 U.S. states.

You also can redeem American miles to fly within Japan for just 7,500 miles one-way in economy and 15,000 miles one-way in business/first.

One final thing to keep in mind about Japan Airlines: The airline serves some smaller airports in the United States. When piecing together award travel plans, consider checking for award space at mid-tier airports like San Diego.

Malaysia Airlines

Malaysia Airlines serves more than 70 destinations across Asia, Europe, the Pacific, and the Middle East.

Despite not offering any routes to North America, the Kuala Lumpur-based airline still can be useful for award travelers who want to book flights between the destinations served. You can redeem American miles for awards on Malaysia Airlines, including itineraries involving other Oneworld and partner airlines.

Like Cathay Pacific's Hong Kong hub, Malaysia Airlines' Kuala Lumpur hub is in “Asia Region 2” for the AAdvantage partner award chart. Unfortunately, Malaysia Airlines award space can be spotty, so you'll need to be patient when looking for a bookable seat.

Qantas

Qantas serves over 95 destinations in 20 countries from its hubs in Australia. You can redeem American miles for travel on Qantas, including itineraries with other Oneworld and partner airlines.

Australia is in the “South Pacific” region on the AAdvantage partner award chart. Here's a look at the amount of American Airlines miles you'll need to redeem for a one-way award between the contiguous 48 U.S. states and the South Pacific region (including Australia):

  • Economy: 40,000 miles
  • Premium economy: 65,000 miles
  • Business/First: 80,000 miles
  • First: 110,000 miles
20 Airlines You Can Book Using American Airlines AAdvantage® Miles (16)

You also can redeem American miles for one-way awards within Australia at a rate of 10,000 miles in economy, 15,000 miles in premium economy, and 20,000 miles in business/first. You can even fly one-way between Australia and New Zealand for 15,000 miles in economy, 20,000 miles in premium economy, and 25,000 miles in business/first.

Qatar Airways

My favorite way to redeem American Airlines miles has been for travel in business class on Qatar Airways. Qatar Airways serves over 170 destinations across six continents from its hub in Doha, and you can include flights operated by other Oneworld and partner airlines when redeeming American miles for Qatar-operated flights.

For 70,000 American miles each way, the AAdvantage partner award chart lets you travel between the contiguous 48 U.S. states and the Middle East or Indian Subcontinent in Qatar's incredible Qsuite product. For an extra 5,000 miles, you can also reach many destinations within the African continent, all with just one stop in Doha.

Credit: American Airlines

There's a huge catch, though: Qatar Airways has severely restricted business class award availability to American Airlines. Even when you can book Qatar awards through JetBlue, these awards may not be bookable through American Airlines.

Royal Air Maroc

Royal Air Maroc serves more than 90 destinations from its hub in Casablanca. You can redeem American miles for travel on Royal Air Maroc, including itineraries involving other Oneworld and partner airlines.

The AAdvantage partner award chart region definitions put Morocco in the “Europe” region. You'll need to redeem American miles as follows to fly between the contiguous 48 U.S. states (or Canada) and the AAdvantage “Europe” region:

  • Economy: 30,000 miles (22,500 miles for travel on off-peak dates)
  • Premium economy: 40,000 miles
  • Business: 57,500 miles
20 Airlines You Can Book Using American Airlines AAdvantage® Miles (18)

You'll need to redeem significantly more miles to connect through Casablanca to other destinations in the Middle East, Africa, or the Indian Subcontinent. However, you can redeem just 5,000 American miles in economy and 10,000 miles in business class to fly within Morocco.

Royal Jordanian Airlines

Royal Jordanian Airlines serves more than 50 destinations in nearly 30 countries from its hub in Amman.

Like Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian Airlines offers a connection point in the Middle East for Oneworld travelers. But unlike Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian does not offer enclosed suites in business class and serves fewer U.S. cities.

Royal Jordanian Airlines' Amman hub lies in the AAdvantage partner award chart “Middle East” region. Based on the award chart, you can fly one-way transatlantic between the contiguous 48 U.S. states and the Middle East for 40,000 AAdvantage miles in economy, 62,500 miles in premium economy, 70,000 miles in business/first, and 115,000 miles in first class.

You also can redeem American Airlines miles to fly within Jordan for 7,500 miles one-way in economy and 10,000 miles one-way in business/first.

SriLankan Airlines

SriLankan Airlines doesn't serve any U.S. airports. However, the carrier serves many destinations in the Indian Subcontinent and some in Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East from its hub in Colombo.

You can redeem American Airlines miles for award travel including segments operated by SriLankan Airlines, other Oneworld airlines, and partner airlines. So, if you live in an area not served directly by SriLankan, you could fly another Oneworld or partner airline and connect to SriLankan Airlines flights.

For reference, here's a look at the AAdvantage partner award chart for one-way itineraries originating in the “Indian Subcontinent” region.

Flights on Non-Alliance Partners

As mentioned earlier, American AAdvantage has some partners that aren't part of the Oneworld alliance. You can't currently redeem American miles for flights on select partners like Aer Lingus, IndiGo, and JetSMART, so we won't discuss these partners further.

But, you can redeem American miles for itineraries that include at least one AAdvantage partner flight at the rates defined by the AAdvantage partner award chart. Here's what you need to know.

Air Tahiti Nui

With just a handful planes in its fleet, Air Tahiti Nui serves five destinations from its hub in Papeete, French Polynesia: Auckland, Los Angeles, Paris (via Los Angeles), Seattle, and Tokyo.

20 Airlines You Can Book Using American Airlines AAdvantage® Miles (22)

You can redeem American miles for one-way flights to or from the South Pacific (which includes French Polynesia, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, and many other destinations) based on the following AAdvantage partner award chart:

20 Airlines You Can Book Using American Airlines AAdvantage® Miles (23)
AAdvantage award chart for one-way Oneworld and partner awards originating in the South Pacific region. Credit: American Airlines

A couple of items in this chart stand out. First, it costs just 5,000 miles extra to fly in business class to Paris compared to Los Angeles. Continuing to Europe from California more than doubles the length of the journey, yet there's a very minor mileage cost.

Also, economy-class travel within the South Pacific costs just 15,000 miles. That means travelers can fly from Papeete to New Zealand, Australia, and many other destinations within the South Pacific for just 15,000 miles one-way in economy.

Cape Air

The first time I saw a Cape Air plane, I thought it was a private plane. But Cape Air is one of the largest independent regional airlines in the U.S.

Based on the AAdvantage partner page for Cape Air, you can only redeem AAdvantage miles for flights on the eight routes shown in the map below. However, you'll be hard-pressed to find bookable awards to destinations other than Manistee, Michigan.

20 Airlines You Can Book Using American Airlines AAdvantage® Miles (24)

On Cape Air routes, you can redeem 12,500 American Airlines miles for short one-way flights.

However, these short flights are often bookable for under $100. Consider whether booking a paid rate will be better before you redeem American miles for your Cape Air flight.

China Southern Airlines

China Southern Airlines is the largest airline in China. From its hubs in Guangzhou and Beijing, it serves 234 destinations in 43 countries.

You can redeem American miles for travel on China Southern Airlines and include Oneworld and other partner airlines on your itineraries. However, you must call AAdvantage Reservations to book awards with one or more segments operated by China Southern Airlines.

Similar to Cathay Pacific's Hong Kong hub and Malaysia Airlines' Kuala Lumpur hub, the two China Southern Airlines hubs in China are located in “Asia Region 2” for the AAdvantage partner award chart.

Etihad Airways

Etihad Airways serves more than 75 destinations across Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America.

Abu Dhabi lies in the “Middle East” region on the AAdvantage partner award chart, but many travelers use Abu Dhabi as a connecting point. Similar to Qatar Airways' hub in Doha, Etihad Airways' hub in the Middle East (Abu Dhabi) offers travelers an option to reach faraway destinations with minimal connections.

However, when booking Etihad awards through AA, you might run into a lack of award space further than 30 days out. Booking Etihad awards close-in is the only option, as this 30-day figure has seemingly materialized as a rule.

If you can find the space, however, one aspirational mileage redemption involves flying in Etihad's A380 first-class cabin, which the airline dubs the “Apartment.” You can redeem American Airlines miles for one of the few opportunities to shower in the sky. We've even seen wide-open Etihad Apartments award availability appear several times within the last year or two, so keep an eye out for future posts if this redemption is on your bucket list.

Fiji Airways

Flying from its Nadi hub, Fiji Airways offers flights to and from major global cities and various Pacific Island countries. At some point next year, Fiji Airways will officially join the Oneworld alliance (and adopt the AAdvantage program).

Similar to Air Tahiti Nui's Papeete hub, Fiji Airways' Nadi hub is located in the “South Pacific” region on the AAdvantage partner award chart.

But, since Fiji Airways operates many flights within Fiji and the South Pacific, it can be a great way to explore the region. You can fly one-way within Fiji for just 5,000 American miles in economy or 10,000 miles in business/first. You also can fly within the South Pacific region (including to Australia or New Zealand) for just 15,000 miles in economy or 30,000 miles in business/first.

GOL Airlines

LATAM's exit from the Oneworld alliance limited American Airlines' reach throughout South America. Luckily, GOL Airlines helps fill that void.

The low-cost Brazilian airline serves over 70 destinations across 11 countries. Of particular interest to U.S.-based travelers, GOL Airlines operates flights between Brazil and Florida, serving both Miami and Orlando.

Most of Brazil is in “South America Region 2” on the AAdvantage partner award chart, but Manaus is in “South America Region 1.” Here's a look at the award chart for one-way itineraries that originate in “South America Region 2.”

20 Airlines You Can Book Using American Airlines AAdvantage® Miles (29)

Plus, one-way award flights wholly within Brazil cost 7,500 miles in economy and 17,500 miles in business/first. It isn't uncommon for economy flights within Brazil to cost under $50 each way, though. So be sure to check paid rates before redeeming miles.

Hawaiian Airlines

Hawaiian Airlines operates many flights between the continental U.S. and Hawaii, but you can't redeem American Airlines miles for these flights. That being said, you can redeem American miles for other flights Hawaiian Airlines operates, including:

  • Intra-Hawaii
  • Hawaii to/from Japan and South Korea
  • Hawaii to/from Tahiti, New Zealand, and Australia

As with most other AAdvantage awards, you can usually include flights operated by Hawaiian Airlines on award itineraries with Oneworld airlines and other partners. However, any flight within Hawaii requires a separate award ticket and is only valid on Hawaiian Airlines.

Final Thoughts

American Airlines miles can fly you to most places you might want to visit. Best of all, you can make most AAdvantage award bookings — including those that involve one or more segments operated by partner airlines — online without needing to speak to an agent.

If you want to travel on an airline not available online, you'll need to contact American Airlines Reservations. If the award can't be booked online, ask the agent to waive any booking fees that might otherwise apply.
